Chalhuanca is the capital of the Aymaraes Province in the Apurímac region in south- central Peru . The city is the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The 2017 census counted 4,297 inhabitants. Ten years earlier the population was 3641.

The city is located about 85 km southwest of the regional capital Abancay on the River Chalhuanca in the Andean highlands at an altitude of 2888  m .
