The Río Chalhuanca is an approximately 122 km long left tributary of the Río Pachachaca in south- central Peru . The Río Chalhuanca flows through the province of Aymaraes in the administrative region of Apurímac . In the upper reaches, the river also bears the alternative names Río Collpa , Río Promesa and Río Cotaruse .

River course

The Río Chalhuanca has its origin in the 4520  m high lake Laguna Yanaccocha in the Cordillera Huanzo , a mountain range of the Peruvian western cordillera . For the first few kilometers, the Río Chalhuanca flows through the Laguna Pucacocha lake . A little later, it takes up the outflow of the Laguna Uchacha lake on the left. It flows in a predominantly northerly direction through the Andes highlands. The places Pampamarca , Cotaruse and Caraybamba lie on the middle course of the river. The Río Chalhuanca takes on the tributaries of the Río Hulchuyo , Río Colcachaca and Río Caraybamba on the right side. From river kilometer 80 the national road 30A ( Puquio - Chalhuanca - Abancay ) follows the course of the river. At river kilometer 48, the small town of Chalhuanca is on the right bank of the river. The Río Chalhuanca finally meets the Río Pachachaca at an altitude of about 2275  m , which later flows into the Río Apurímac .

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Río Chalhuanca covers an area of around 2420 km². The Río Chalhuanca drains much of the Aymaraes province. In the west, the catchment area of the Río Chalhuanca borders that of the Río Chicha , tributary of the Río Pampas . The upper reaches of the Río Pachachaca runs further east. The area south of the Cordillera Huanzo, which acts as a watershed , is drained from the Río Ocoña to the Pacific Ocean .
