The Capaya district is located in the Aymaraes Province in the Apurímac region in central southern Peru . The district was established on January 12, 1956. It has an area of ​​83.3 km². The 2017 census counted 621 residents. In 1993 the population was 501, in 2007 it was 729. The district administration is located in the 3290  m high village of Capaya with 244 inhabitants (as of 2017). Capaya is located 21 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Chalhuanca .

Geographical location

The Capaya district is located in the Andean highlands in the west of the Aymaraes province. The Río Chalhuanca flows north along the eastern district boundary . Its left tributaries Quebrada Huacasa and Río Capaya flow through the district in an easterly direction and drain the area.

The Capaya district is bordered to the west by the Pampachiri , Pomacocha and Tumay Huaraca districts (all three in the Andahuaylas province ), to the north by the Toraya district , to the east by the Ihuayllo and Soraya districts and to the south by the Sañayca district .
