The Cotaruse district is located in the Aymaraes province of the Apurímac region in south- central Peru . The district founded on July 1, 1914 has an area of 1749.83 km². At the 2017 census there were 2570 inhabitants in the district. In 1993 the population was 2864, in 2007 4049. The population consists mainly of members of indigenous peoples. The district administration is located in the village of Cotaruse on the Río Chalhuanca at 3248 m altitude with 611 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The Cotaruse district extends over the south of the Aymaraes province. The village of Cotaruse is about 15 km south of the provincial capital Chalhuanca . The Cotaruse district extends over the Andean highlands and extends in the south to the Cordillera Huanzo , a mountain range of the Peruvian western cordillera . The Río Chalhuanca flows through the district in a predominantly north-northeast direction.
The district Cotaruse bordered to the north by the districts Sañayca , Chalhuanca and Caraybamba , on the east by the district Juan Espinoza Medrano ( province Antabamba ), on the south by the district Coronel Castañeda , in the southwest of the district Upahuacho , the west by the district Coracora ( the last three in Parinacochas Province ) and to Chipao District ( Lucanas Province ).
