The Juan Espinoza Medrano district is located in the Antabamba province in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was established on December 12, 1942. He was named after Juan de Espinoza Medrano (around 1629–1688), a Peruvian writer.

The district has an area of ​​632 km². The 2017 census counted 1788 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2147, in 2007 it was 1975. The district administration is located in the 3229  m high village of Mollebamba with 666 inhabitants (as of 2017). Mollebamba is located 8 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Antabamba .

Geographical location

The Juan Espinoza Medrano district is located in the Andean highlands in the southwest of the Antabamba province. The longitudinal extent in NNW-SSE direction is 44 km, the maximum width about 23 km. The district extends over large parts of the catchment area of the Río Mollebamba, a left tributary of the Río Pachachaca (also Río Ichuni and Río Antabamba). Only its lower 5.5 kilometers of the river with the left tributary Quebrada Huancaspaco are in the neighboring districts of Sabaino and Huaquirca to the north . In the south, the Juan Espinoza Medrano district extends to the Cordillera Huanzo .

The Juan Espinoza Medrano district is bordered by the Cotaruse district to the west, the Caraybamba district to the northwest (both of the aforementioned districts are in the Aymaraes province ), the Sabaino and Huaquirca districts to the north, the Antabamba district to the east and the southeast to the district of Huaynacotas ( province of La Unión ) and in the south-west to the district of Coronel Castañeda ( province of Parinacochas ).
