The Sabaino district is located in the Antabamba province in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on August 20, 1872. It has an area of ​​177 km². The 2017 census counted 1161 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1360, in 2007 it was 1455. The district administration is located in the 3433  m high village of Sabaino with 717 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sabaino is 9 km northwest of the provincial capital Antabamba . The only larger town in the district besides Sabaino is Antilla with 233 inhabitants.

Geographical location

The Sabaino district is located in the Andean highlands in the north-west of the Antabamba province. The longitudinal extent in SW-NE direction is 22.5 km, the maximum width just under 13 km. The Río Pachachaca (also Río Ichuni and Río Antabamba) crosses the district in a north-westerly direction.

The Sabaino district borders in the southwest with the district Caraybamba , in the west with the districts Chalhuanca and Pocohuanca (the three aforementioned districts are in the province Aymaraes ), in the northwest with the district Pachaconas , in the northeast with the districts Chuquibambilla and Pataypampa (both in the province of Grau ), in the east to the district of Huaquirca and in the southeast to the district of Juan Espinoza Medrano .
