The El Oro district is located in the Antabamba province in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was established on August 18, 1961. It has an area of ​​66.6 km². The 2017 census counted 577 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 558, in 2007 it was 516. The district administration is located in the 3280  m high village of Ayahuay with 461 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ayahuay is located 26 km northwest of the provincial capital Antabamba .

Geographical location

The district of El Oro is located in the Andean highlands in the extreme northwest of the province of Antabamba on the right bank of the north-west flowing Río Pachachaca (also Río Ichuni and Río Antabamba).

The El Oro district is bordered in the southwest by the Pocohuanca district ( Aymaraes province ), in the northwest by the Tapairihua district (also in the Aymaraes province), in the north and northeast by the Chacoche and Circa districts (both in the Abancay province ) and in the southeast to the Pachaconas district .
