The district of Oropesa is located in the province of Antabamba in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 1171 km². The 2017 census counted 2402 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1989, in 2007 2518. The district administration is located in the 3310 m high village of Oropesa with 1740 inhabitants (as of 2017). Oropesa is 35 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Antabamba .
Geographical location
The district of Oropesa is located in the Andean highlands . It extends over the east of the Antabamba province. The longitudinal extension in NNE-SSW direction is 58 km, the maximum width is 32 km. The district includes the upper catchment area of the Río Vilcabamba (also Río Totora Oropesa and Río Oropesa) and extends in the south to the Cordillera Huanzo .
The district of Oropesa borders in the west on the districts Antabamba and Huaquirca , in the northwest on the districts Virundo , Turpay and Mamara (all three in the province of Grau ), in the north on the districts of Micaela Bastidas and Curasco (also both in the province of Grau), in the southeast to the districts of Challhuahuacho and Haquira (both in the province of Cotabambas ), in the southeast to the districts of Llusco and Santo Tomás (both in the province of Chumbivilcas ) and in the south to the districts of Puyca and Huaynacotas (both in the province of La Unión ).
