The district of Micaela Bastidas is located in the province of Grau in the Apurímac region in the central south of Peru . The district was established on December 20, 1957. The district was named after Micaela Bastidas , wife of José Gabriel Condorcanqui , the leader of an indigenous uprising against the Spaniards.

The district extends over an area of ​​105 km². The 2017 census counted 971 residents. In 2007 the population was 1255. The district administration is located in the 3508  m high town of Ayrihuanca with 437 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ayrihuanca is 10 km east of the provincial capital Chuquibambilla .

Geographical location

The district of Micaela Bastidas is located in the Andean highlands on the east bank of the Río Vilcabamba in the central east of the province of Grau.

The Micaela Bastidas district is bordered to the west by the districts of Santa Rosa , Vilcabamba and Curpahuasi , to the northeast by the Curasco district , to the northeast by the Oropesa district and to the south by the Mamara and San Antonio districts .
