The Mariscal Gamarra District , or Gamarra District for short , is located in the Province of Grau in the Apurímac region in the central south of Peru . The district was established on December 11, 1942. The district was named after Agustín Gamarra , General and President of Peru.

The district has an area of ​​349 km². The 2017 census counted 2927 residents. In 1993 the population was 4586, in 2007 it was 3965. The district administration is located in the 3445  m high village of Palpacachi with 305 inhabitants (as of 2017). Palpacachi is located about 34 km northeast of the provincial capital Chuquibambilla .

Geographical location

The district of Mariscal Gamarra is located in the Andean highlands on the left bank of the Río Vilcabamba, which flows in a north-northeastern direction, in the northeast of the province of Grau.

The Mariscal Gamarra district borders in the southwest on the Curpahuasi district , in the west on the Lambrama district ( Abancay province ), in the north on the Curahuasi district (also in the Abancay province), in the east on the Coyllurqui district ( Cotabambas province ) and in the southeast to the Huayllati District .
