Agustín Gamarra (born August 27, 1785 in Cuzco , † November 18, 1841 in Ingavi , Bolivia ) was Peruvian General and President of Peru from September 1, 1829 to December 20, 1833 and a second time from August 25, 1838 to on November 18, 1841.

Gamarra studied theology at the Colegio San Francisco de Asís in Cuzco, but joined the Spanish army as a volunteer before completing his studies . He served in Bolivia, fought against Argentina and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In 1821 he was posted to Lima and became the commander of the 2nd battalion of the Cuzco regiment . Here he joined the Independents and was promoted to colonel and brigadier general. Until 1824 he served under Simón Bolívar and Antonio José de Sucre .

He then became prefect of Cuzco and from 1828 commander in chief of the army in the fighting against Bolivia. On his return to Lima, he spoke out against the then President of Peru José de La Mar , became provisional president himself and was elected regular president in the same year. In 1839 he was re-elected President of Peru.

Gamarra was killed during the Battle of Ingavi on November 18, 1841.
