Felipe Santiago de Salaverry (born May 3, 1806 in Lima , † February 19, 1836 in Arequipa ) was a Peruvian general and President of Peru from February 23, 1835 to February 7, 1836.

Life

Felipe Santiago de Salaverry attended the Real Convictorio de San Carlos in Lima, one of the city's renowned high schools.

Military career

Against his father's wishes, he left school in 1820 and volunteered to join the troops led by José de San Martín who fought for liberation from Spanish colonial rule. Initially with the rank of cadet , he went through a steep career fighting the Spaniards. He fought in the battles of Junín and Ayacucho .

After the end of Spanish rule he participated in the (failed) Peruvian campaign against Greater Colombia in 1828/1829. In 1831/1832 he was military commander of the city of Tacna . In the service of the Peruvian government, he put down several riots. In gratitude, he was awarded the rank of general in 1834.

President of Peru

On February 23, 1835 Salaverry rose against the government of Luis José de Orbegoso, took the capital Lima and declared himself the "Jefe Supremo de la República", that is to say, President.

When Orbegoso asked the Bolivian President Andrés de Santa Cruz for help and the Bolivian army invaded Peru, Salaverry and his army opposed the Bolivians. On February 7, 1836, the troops of Salaverry were defeated by the troops of Santa Cruz in the battle of Socabaya .

After several days Salaverry surrendered to General William Miller (Guillermo Miller), who handed him over to Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz had Salaverry - together with his officers - executed after a short trial in the main square of Arequipa city .

Honors

The Puerto de Salaverry , the port of the city of Trujillo, is named after Felipe Santiago de Salaverry in Peru .
