The province of Grau is one of seven provinces in the administrative region of Apurímac in southern Peru . The province extends over an area of ​​2175 km². The population development is declining. The 2017 census counted 21,242 inhabitants in the province of Grau. In 1993 and 2007 the population was 26,678 and 25,090 respectively. The provincial capital is Chuquibambilla . The province was named after Rafael Grau Cavero (1876-1917), politician and son of the well-known Peruvian admiral Miguel Grau Seminario .

Geographical location

The province of Grau extends over the Andes highlands south of the glaciated mountain range of the Cordillera Vilcabamba . The middle reaches of the Río Vilcabamba flows through the province in a north-northeast direction.

The province of Grau borders on the province of Abancay in the northwest , on the province of Cotabambas in the east and on the province of Antabamba in the south .
