The Virundo district is located in the Grau Province in the Apurímac region in the central south of Peru . The district was established on June 12, 1985. It extends over an area of ​​114 km². The 2017 census counted 705 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 713, in 2007 it was 998. The district administration is located in the 3845  m high town of San Juan de Virundo (or Virundo for short) with 648 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Juan de Virundo is 16 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Chuquibambilla .

Geographical location

The district of Virundo is located in the Andean highlands in the extreme south of the province of Grau. The area is drained to the north to the Río Vilcabamba .

The district of Virundo borders in the northwest and in the north with the district Pataypampa , in the northeast with the district Turpay , in the southeast with the district Oropesa ( province Antabamba ) and in the southwest with the district Huaquirca (also in the province Antabamba).
