The Progreso district is located in the Grau Province in the Apurímac region in the central south of Peru . The district was established on March 17, 1958. It extends over an area of ​​240 km². The 2017 census counted 3119 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2644, in 2007 2723. The district administration is located in the 3850  m high village of Progreso with 1167 inhabitants (as of 2017). Progreso is 25 km east of the provincial capital Chuquibambilla .

Geographical location

The Progreso district is located in the Andean highlands in the east of the Grau province. The Río Trapiche, the right tributary of the Río Vilcabamba , drains the area to the northwest. In the northwest, the district extends to the east bank of the Río Vilcabamba.

The Progreso district borders in the southwest on the Curasco district , in the far northwest on the Curpahuasi district , in the north on the Huayllati district , in the northeast on the Coyllurqui district ( Cotabambas province ) and in the east and southeast on the Challhuahuacho district (also in the Cotabambas Province).
