The district of Challhuahuacho (alternative spelling: District Chalhuahuacho ) is located in the province of Cotabambas in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was formed on November 18, 1994 from parts of Mara District . It has an area of ​​454 km². The 2017 census counted 14,525 inhabitants. In 2007, the population was 7321. seat of the district administration is the 3698  m small town high altitude Challhuahuacho with 5,648 inhabitants (2017). Challhuahuacho is located 20 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Tambobamba .

Geographical location

The district of Challhuahuacho is located in the Andean highlands in the southwest of the province of Cotabambas. The Río Challhuahuacho , the right source river of the Río Punanqui , crosses the district in a north-easterly direction and drains the area.
