The Cotabambas district is located in the Cotabambas Province in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. It has an area of ​​329 km². The 2017 census counted 3886 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4733, in 2007 it was 4166. The district administration is located in the 3425  m high village of Cotabambas with 1604 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cotabambas is located 30 km northwest of the provincial capital Tambobamba .

Geographical location

The district of Cotabambas is located in the Andean highlands in the north of the province of Cotabambas. The Río Apurímac flows west along the northern district boundary. Its tributaries, Río Aquillano and Río Vilcabamba, run north along the eastern and western district boundaries .

The Cotabambas district borders on the Coyllurqui district in the south, the Curahuasi district ( Abancay province ) in the west, the Chinchaypujio district ( Anta province ) in the north and the Tambopampa district in the east .

In addition to the main town of Cotabambas, there are the following larger towns in the district:
