The Mara district is located in the Cotabambas Province in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. On November 18, 1994, the western part was detached and has since formed the newly established Challhuahuacho district .
The Mara district has an area of 222 km². The 2017 census counted 5848 inhabitants. In 2007 the population was 6141. The district administration is based in the 3770 m high town of Mara with 1146 inhabitants (as of 2017). Mara is 17 km southeast of the provincial capital Tambobamba .
Geographical location
The Mara District is located in the Andean highlands in the east of the Cotabambas Province. The district lies between the rivers of Río Punanqui in the west and Río Santo Tomás in the east.
The Mara District is bordered to the south by the district Haquira , in the southwest to the district Challhuahuacho, in the northwest on the district Tambobamba , in the northeast on the district CCAPI ( province Paruro ) and on the southeast by the district Capacmarca ( Chumbivilcas Province ).
