The Río Santo Tomás is an approximately 152 km long left tributary of the Río Apurímac in south-central Peru .

River course

The Río Santo Tomás rises on the southeast flank of the 5300  m high Qullpa K'uchu. The headwaters are in the east of the Cordillera Huanzo , a mountain range of the Peruvian western cordillera . The Río Santo Tomás initially flows 50 km northeast through the Santo Tomás district of the Chumbivilcas province . Then the Río Santo Tomás turns north. The small town of Santo Tomás is located east of the river at 90 km . From river kilometer 58 the river forms the border between the regions Apurímac (in the west) and Cusco (in the east). The Río Santo Tomás finally flows into the Río Apurímac at an altitude of about 2277  m . Major tributaries of the Río Santo Tomás are the Río Cocha and Río Punanqui , both from the left.

Catchment area and hydrology

The catchment area of the Río Santo Tomás covers an area of ​​3440 km². The catchment area borders on that of the Río Velille to the east and that of the Río Vilcabamba to the west . The rivers flow into the Río Apurímac above and below the Río Santo Tomás. In the south, across the Cordillera Huanzo, which runs along the continental divide , lies the catchment area of ​​the Río Ocoña . This flows to the Pacific Ocean . The mean discharge of the Río Santo Tomás is 84 m³ / s.
