Enrico Noris OESA (born August 29, 1631 in Verona , † February 23, 1704 in Rome ) was an Italian church historian, cardinal and librarian.

life and work

Enrico Noris was born in Verona in 1631. He studied rhetoric and logic in Rimini and then joined the Augustinian order , where he was named Enrico. After completing his novitiate and religious training, he began studying philosophy and theology in Rome. After his ordination he taught theology and philosophy, 1658 in Pesaro, 1662 in Perugia, 1664 in Florence, 1666 in Padua, 1671 in Rome, 1674 in Pisa.

His main work is his Vindiciae augustinianae , an extensive exposition and defense of the teaching of Augustine of Hippo in the dispute with the theologian Pelagius and his students.

Because of his orthodox views, allegations were made against him, which accused him of Jansenism and Bayanism . By the decree of March 4, 1667 to be under the pseudonym was Annibal Corradinus ( Annibale Corradini in) Altdorf misplaced factory Miles macedonicus plautino sale perfrictus by the Congregation of the Index set.

Cosimo III. de 'Medici appointed him personal theologian and professor of church history at the University of Pisa . Other offerings, including from Popes Clement X and Innocent XI. he refused.

In 1695 he became a cardinal and from 1700 he was custodian of the Vatican library . He is considered one of the most learned theologians of his time. The general scholar encyclopedia of Jöcher According to he was "extremely busy [and] studied all the days of 14 hours."
