The Río Velille (in the upper reaches: Río Huerta and Río Cayarani ) is an approximately 195 km long left tributary of the Río Apurímac in the regions of Arequipa and Cusco in south-central Peru .

River course

The Río Velille rises in the province of Condesuyos (Arequipa region) in the east of the Cordillera Huanzo , a mountain range of the Peruvian western cordillera , at an altitude of about 5000  m . The Río Velille initially flows almost 50 km in a predominantly east-northeast direction to the confluence of the Río Palca from the south. In this section, the river is also called Río Huerta . The river then turns north. At river km 126 it passes the village of Cayarani on the right bank of the river . At river kilometer 100 the small town of Velille is on the right bank of the river. Up to that point the river is also called Río Cayarani . The Río Velille flows through the Andes highlands in a narrow gorge in a northerly direction. At river kilometer 68, the Río Chilloroya meets the Río Velille from the right. The village of Chamaca is located above the confluence . For the last 30 kilometers, the river turns north-northwest before flowing into the Río Apurímac.

Catchment area and hydrology

The catchment area of the Río Velille covers an area of 3700 km². The catchment area borders on that of the Río Livitaca to the east and that of the Río Santo Tomás to the west . The rivers flow into the Río Apurímac above and below the Río Velille. Beyond the Cordillera Huanzo, which runs along the continental divide , lies the catchment area of the Río Ocoña in the southwest and that of the Río Camaná (also Río Colca ) in the south . Both rivers flow to the Pacific Ocean . The mean discharge of the Río Velille is 45 m³ / s.
