The Tambobamba district is located in the Cotabambas province in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​714 km². The 2017 census counted 10,381 residents. In 1993 the population was 10,526, in 2007 10,212. The seat of the district administration is the provincial capital Tambobamba at an altitude of 3250  m with 4063 inhabitants (status 2017).

Geographical location

The Tambobamba district is located in the Andean highlands in the northeast of the Cotabambas province. The Río Apurímac , its left tributary Río Santo Tomás and its left tributary Río Punanqui flow north along the eastern district boundary . The Río Palcaro, a left tributary of the Río Punanqui, crosses the district area in an easterly direction. In the northwest, the Río Aquillano runs along the district boundary.

The Tambobamba district is bordered to the west by the district Coyllurqui , in the northwest on the district Cotabambas , in the far north to the district Chinchaypujio ( province of Anta ), northeast to the districts Huanoquite and CCAPI (both in the province of Paruro ), on the southeast by the District Mara and in the south to the District Challhuahuacho .
