The Haquira district is located in the Cotabambas Province in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of 484 km². The 2017 census counted 9,430 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 9,784, in 2007 10,437. Seat of the district administration is 3671 m Town highly preferred Haquira with 3418 inhabitants (2017). Haquira is located 30 km south of the provincial capital Tambobamba .
Geographical location
The Haquira district is located in the Andean highlands in the southeast of the Cotabambas province. The Río Santo Tomás , left tributary of the Río Apurímac , flows north along the eastern district boundary. The Río Cocha, its tributary, crosses the district area in an east-northeast direction and drains the area.
The Haquira district borders in the southwest with the Oropesa district ( Antabamba province ), in the northwest with the districts Challhuahuacho and Mara , in the east with the district Colquemarca , in the southeast with the district Quiñota and in the extreme south with the district Llusco (the last three in of the province of Chumbivilcas ).
