The Curahuasi district is located in the Abancay Province in the Apurímac region in central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​857 km². At the 2017 census, there were 17,065 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 16,137, in 2007 it was 16,532. The district administration is located in the small town of Curahuasi with 6780 inhabitants (as of 2017) at an altitude of about 2688  m . Curahuasi is 3 km south of the Río Apurímac and 23 km east-northeast of the provincial and regional capital Abancay . The Diospi Suyana mission hospital is located in the city of Curahuasi . Sayhuite (or Saywite ) archaeological site is located 12 km west of Curahuasi.

Geographical location

The Curahuasi district is located in the northeast of the Abancay Province. The district is located in the Andean highlands on the south bank of the Río Apurímac, which flows west-northwest. The Río Antilla drains the central part of the district north to the Río Apurímac.

The Curahuasi district is bordered on the southwest by the district Lambrama , on the west by the districts of Abancay , Tamburco and Huanipaca , on the north by the districts Mollepata and Limatambo (both in the province of Anta ) on the east by the districts of Cotabambas and Coyllurqui (both in the province Cotabambas ) and in the south-east to the district of Mariscal Gamarra ( province of Grau ).
