The Abancay district is located in the Abancay Province in the Apurímac region in central Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. It has an area of ​​287 km². At the 2017 census, 71,260 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 51,068, in 2007 51,225. The district administration is located in the provincial and regional capital Abancay at an altitude of about 2378  m with 64,873 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Abancay District is located in the central north of the Abancay Province. The district is located in the Andean highlands on the east bank of the Río Pachachaca , a left tributary of the Río Apurímac . In the north of the district rises the 5235  m high mountain Nevado Ampay .

The Abancay district is bordered to the south by the district Lambrama , in the southwest of the district Pichirhua , the west by the district Huancarama ( province of Andahuaylas ), in the northwest on the district Huanipaca , on the north by the district Tamburco and the east by the district Curahuasi .
