The Chacoche district is located in the Abancay province in the Apurímac region in the central south of Peru . The district was established on December 28, 1961. It has an area of ​​177 km². The 2017 census counted 1396 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1434, in 2007 it was 1213. The district administration is located in the 3433  m high village of Chacoche with 206 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chacoche is 36 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Abancay .

Geographical location

The district of Chacoche is located in the Andean highlands in the extreme southwest of the province of Abancay. The longitudinal extension in north-south direction is 27.5 km. The Río Pachachaca flows northeast along the northern district boundary . The north of the district is drained via the Río Accomayo, the south via the Río Silcon (in the upper reaches Río Parco and Río Kesari), both right tributaries of the Río Pachachaca. A ridge runs along the western district boundary. This reaches a height of 5051  m not far from the southernmost point of the district in Cerro Suparaura .

The Chacoche district borders in the west on the district Chapimarca ( province Aymaraes ), in the north on the district Pichirhua , in the northeast and in the southeast on the district Circa and in the extreme south on the district El Oro ( province Antabamba ).
