The Vilcabamba district is located in the province of Grau in the Apurímac region in the central south of Peru . The district was established on February 20, 1941. It extends over an area of ​​6.52 km². The 2017 census counted 1302 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1082, in 2007 it was 1213. The district administration is located in the 2780  m high village of Vilcabamba with 1259 inhabitants (as of 2017). Vilcabamba is located 9.5 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Chuquibambilla .

Geographical location

The district of Vilcabamba is located in the Andean highlands on the left bank of the north flowing Río Vilcabamba , above the confluence of the Río Chuquibambilla, in the center of the province of Grau.

The Vilcabamba district borders in the southwest on the Santa Rosa district , in the northwest on the Chuquibambilla district , in the north on the Curpahuasi district and in the east on the Micaela Bastidas district .
