The district of Huaynacotas is located in the province of La Unión in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on June 22, 1825. It has an area of ​​934 km². The 2017 census counted 2041 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2801, in 2007 it was 2464. The district administration is located in the 2590  m high village of Taurisma with 178 inhabitants (as of 2017). Taurisma is located 6 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Cotahuasi .

Geographical location

The district of Huaynacotas is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the central north of the province of La Unión. The upper reaches of the Río Cotahuasi flows south along the eastern district boundary . The Cordillera Huanzo runs in the far north of the district .

The Huaynacotas district borders on the Pampamarca district to the west , the Juan Espinoza Medrano , Antabamba and Oropesa districts to the north (all three in the Antabamba province ), the Puyca district to the east and the Alca , Tomepampa and Cotahuasi districts to the south .
