The Charcana district is located in the La Unión province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on June 22, 1825. It has an area of ​​162 km². The 2017 census counted 618 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 822, in 2007 it was 647. The district administration is located in the approximately 3417  m high village of Charcana with 399 inhabitants (as of 2017). Charcana is about 20 km west of the provincial capital Cotahuasi .

Geographical location

The Charcana district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the southwest of the La Unión province. The district is located on the right bank of the Río Cotahuasi, which flows to the southwest .

The Charcana district borders in the extreme southeast on the Toro district , in the south Wen on the Quechualla district , in the west and northwest on the districts of San José de Ushua and Oyolo (both in the Páucar del Sara Sara province ) and in the east on the Pampamarca district .
