The district of Alca is located in the province of La Unión in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on May 4, 1835. It has an area of ​​192 km². The 2017 census counted 1975 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2379, in 2007 it was 2169. The district administration is located in the 2750  m high village of Alca with 539 inhabitants (as of 2017). Alca is 16 km northeast of the provincial capital, Cotahuasi .

Geographical location

The district of Alca is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the southeast of the province of La Unión. The upper reaches of the Río Cotahuasi flows along the northwestern district boundary to the southwest. In the extreme southeast rises the 5498  m high extinct volcano Firura .

The Alca district borders in the southwest on the Tomepampa district , in the northwest on the Huaynacotas district , in the northeast on the Puyca district and in the south on the Salamanca district ( Condesuyos province ).
