The province of La Unión is one of eight provinces in the Arequipa region in southern Peru . The province has an area of 4746.4 km². At the 2017 census, 12,827 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 17,295, in 2007 15,662. The provincial administration is located in the small town of Cotahuasi .
Geographical location
The province of La Unión is located about 570 km southeast of the state capital Lima . It stretches across the Peruvian Western Cordillera and has a lengthwise extension in NE-SW direction of about 120 km. The Cordillera Huanzo mountain range runs along the northern provincial border . The river Río Cotahuasi , left headwaters of the Río Ocoña , crosses the area in a south-westerly direction.
The province of La Unión borders in the southwest on the province of Caravelí , in the west on the Ayacucho region , in the north on the Apurímac region , in the northeast on the Cusco region and in the southeast on the province of Condesuyos .
Administrative division
The province of La Unión is divided into 11 districts (distritos) . The district of Cotahuasi is the seat of the provincial administration.
