The Toro district is located in the La Unión province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on May 4, 1835. It has an area of ​​526 km². The 2017 census counted 605 residents. In 1993 the population was 1443, in 2007 1005. The district administration is located in the 2964  m high village of Toro with 264 inhabitants (as of 2017). Toro is 7 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Cotahuasi .

Geographical location

The Toro district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the south of the La Unión province. The Río Cotahuasi flows in sections along the northern and northwestern district boundaries to the southwest. Then it crosses the extreme southwest of the district and unites with the Río Marán to the Río Ocoña . The latter flows a short distance along the western district boundary to the south. In the southeast of the district the 6,093  m high Solimana volcano rises .

The district of Toro borders in the northwest with the districts Tauría and Quechualla , in the extreme northeast with the districts Charcana and Pampamarca , in the east with the district Cotahuasi , in the extreme southeast with the district Salamanca ( province Condesuyos ) and in the south with the districts Chichas and Yanaquihua (both in Condesuyos Province).
