The Yanaquihua District is located in the Condesuyos Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​1056 km². The 2017 census counted 4288 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3344, in 2007 it was 4936. The district administration is located in the village of Yanaquihua, which is about 3000  m high and has 611 inhabitants (as of 2017). Yanaquihua is located about 25 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Chuquibamba .

Geographical location

The district of Yanaquihua extends over the arid plateau south of the Cordillera Volcánica in the southwest of the province of Condesuyos. The Río Ocoña crosses the district in a southerly direction. Its left tributary Quebrada Chorunga flows along the southeastern district boundary to the southwest.

The district of Yanaquihua borders in the south and in the southwest with the district Río Grande , in the west with the district Cahuacho ( province Caravelí ), in the northwest with the districts Tauría and Toro (both in the province La Unión ), in the north with the district Chichas , in the extreme northeast to the Salamanca and in the east and southeast to the district of Andaray .
