The Chuquibamba District is located in the Condesuyos Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​1186 km². The 2017 census counted 3526 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3797, in 2007 it was 3618. The district administration is located in the provincial capital of Chuquibamba, 2945  m high, with 3007 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The district of Chuquibamba has a lengthwise extension in the NNW-SSE direction of 93 km. It reaches from the foot of the Coropuna volcano to 22 km to the Pacific coast . It extends over the plateau south of the Cordillera Volcánica in the southeast of the Condesuyos province. The Quebrada del Jaguay, a mostly dry-fallen tributary of the Pacific Ocean, crosses the district in a southerly direction. The Quebrada de Huario runs in the central east of the district in a south-easterly direction. The city of Chuquibamba is located in the valley. Irrigated agriculture is only practiced along this course of the river. Otherwise the area is desert-like. In the north of the district the 4558  m high mountain Ñawicha rises .

The district of Chuquibamba is bordered to the south and southwest by the districts of Nicolás de Piérola , Mariscal Cáceres and Ocoña (all three in the province of Camaná ), to the west by the district of Andaray , to the northeast by the district of Pampacolca ( province of Castilla ), to the central east to the district of Iray and, in the south-east, to the districts of Aplao and Uraca (both in the province of Castilla).
