The district of Aplao is located in the province of Castilla in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​618 km². The 2017 census counted 9,250 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 8,262 and in 2007 it was 8,851. The district administration is located in the provincial capital Aplao, 617  m high, with 3035 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Aplao district extends over the plateau at the foot of the Cordillera Volcánica in the southwest of the province of Castilla. The Río Majes flows south along the eastern district boundary . Irrigated agriculture is practiced along the river bank. Otherwise the area is desert-like.

The Aplao district is bordered to the west by the Chuquibamba and Iray districts (both in the Condesuyos province ), to the extreme north by the Pampacolca and Tipán districts , to the east by the Uñón and Huancarqui districts and to the south by the Uraca district .
