The Ayo district is located in the Castilla province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on April 3, 1928. It has an area of ​​285 km². The 2017 census counted 261 residents. In 1993 the population was 355, in 2007 it was 360. The district administration is located in the 1956  m high village of Ayo with 210 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ayo is located 50 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Aplao .

Geographical location

The Ayo district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the central east of the province of Castilla. The rivers Río Ayo and Río Mamacocha drain the area south to the Río Colca , which forms the district boundary in the extreme southeast.

The Ayo district is bordered to the south and the southwest by the district UNON , in the far west to the district Machaguay , on the north by the district Andagua , in the northeast on the district Chachas , on the east by the district Choco and in the extreme southeast of the district Huambo ( Caylloma Province ).
