The Huambo district is located in the Caylloma Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on November 4, 1889. It has an area of ​​716 km². The 2017 census counted 670 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1488, in 2007 it was 895. The district administration is located in the 3332  m high village of Huambo with 454 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huambo is located 55 km west of the provincial capital Chivay .

The Huambo volcanic field is centrally located in the district.

Geographical location

The Huambo district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica in the west of the Caylloma province. The district is located on the left bank of the Río Colca, which flows to the southwest .

The Huambo district is bordered in the northeast by the Cabanaconde district , in the southeast by the Lluta district , in the southwest by the Huancarqui district ( Castilla province ) and in the northwest by the Uñón , Ayo and Choco districts (all three in the Castilla province).
