The Lluta district is located in the Caylloma Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has existed since the founding years of the Republic of Peru. On December 21, 1999, the southern part of the district was separated and has since formed the newly established Majes district .
The Lluta district has an area of 1227 km². The 2017 census counted 718 inhabitants. In 2007 the population was 1417. The district administration is located in the 3000 m high town of Lluta with 318 inhabitants (as of 2017). Lluta is 60 km southwest of the provincial capital Chivay . The 6,288 m high Ampato volcano rises in the northeast of the district, 26 km north-northeast of the main town of Lluta. The Sabancaya ( 5976 m ) and Hualca Hualca ( 6025 m ) volcanoes lie north of the Ampato volcano along the district boundary .
Geographical location
The Lluta district is located on the southern flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the southwest of the Caylloma province. The maximum length in SSW-NNE direction is about 56 km. The area is drained south via the Río Siguas, a right tributary of the Río Quilca . In the extreme south-southwest, the district extends to the coastal desert of southern Peru.
The Lluta district borders in the southwest on the Majes district, in the west on the Huancarqui district ( Castilla province ), in the northwest on the Huambo and Cabanaconde districts , in the northeast on the Maca and Achoma districts and in the southeast on the Huanca and Santa Isabel de districts Siguas ( Arequipa Province ).
