The Arequipa Province is one of eight provinces in the Arequipa region in southern Peru . The province has an area of 9,689.06 km². At the 2017 census, 1,080,635 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 676,790, in 2007 it was 864,250. The provincial administration is located in the city of Arequipa .
Geographical location
The province of Arequipa is located about 760 km south-southeast of the state capital Lima . It extends in the southwest over the coastal desert of Peru and in the northeast over a section of the Peruvian western cordillera , which has several volcanoes such as the Misti and the Chachani . The area has very little rainfall. The Río Quilca crosses the province in a predominantly south-westerly direction.
The province of Arequipa borders in the southwest on the province of Camaná , in the north on the province of Caylloma , in the east on the Moquegua region and in the south on the province of Islay .
Administrative division
The province of Arequipa is divided into 29 districts (distritos) . Arequipa district is the seat of the provincial administration.
