The Mariano Melgar District is located in the Arequipa Province of Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was established on August 27, 1965. It was named after the Peruvian poet Mariano Melgar (1790-1815). The district has an area of 29.83 km². At the 2017 census, 59,918 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 47,428, in 2007 it was 52,144. The district administration is located in the southwest of the district at an altitude of 2385 m . The district and the city of the same name Mariano Melgar are congruent. This is part of the metropolitan area of the provincial and regional capital Arequipa and is located 3 km east of the city center. In the winter months there are frequent heavy rain events with floods and landslides.
Geographical location
The Mariano Melgar district is centrally located in the province of Arequipa. The district is located on the southwest slope of the Misti volcano , which is covered with former lava flows at higher altitudes.
Mariano Melgar District is bordered to the west by the district of Miraflores , on the east by the district Chiguata , the south by the district Paucarpata and in the extreme southwest of the city district of Arequipa .
