The Alto Selva Alegre district is located in the Arequipa Province of Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was established on November 16, 1992. It has an area of 67.6 km². At the 2017 census, there were 85,870 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 53,405, in 2007 72,696. The district administration is located in the 2500 m high town of Selva Alegre . This is part of the metropolitan area of the regional capital Arequipa and is located 2.7 km north-northeast of the city center.
Geographical location
The Alto Selva Alegre district is located in the northern center of the Arequipa province. The district has a lengthwise extension in SW-NE direction of 15 km. The course of the Río Chili forms the western boundary of the district. This extends in the northeast to the 5822 m high summit of the Misti volcano . Much of the district is located on the southwest slope of the volcano, which is covered with former lava flows.
To the west and north, on the opposite bank of the Río Chili, is the Cayma district . In the southeast, the Alto Selva Alegre district borders on the Miraflores district , in the extreme south on the urban district of Arequipa and in the extreme southwest on the Yanahuara district .
