The Arequipa district is located in the Arequipa Province of Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of 12.8 km². At the 2017 census, 55,437 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 77,209, in 2007 it was 61,519. The district is congruent with the provincial and regional capital Arequipa .
Geographical location
The Arequipa district is located at an altitude of 2337 m in the center of the Arequipa province at the foot of the Misti volcano . The district has a longitudinal extension in SSW-NNE direction of about 7 km and a maximum width of 3.6 km. The Río Chili flows through the far west of the district in a south-south-west direction.
In the northeast the district borders on the districts of Alto Selva Alegre , Miraflores and Mariano Melgar . In the southeast are the districts of Paucarpata , José Luis Bustamante y Rivero and Jacobo Hunter . To the west, Arequipa borders the Sachaca and Yanahuara districts .
