The Polobaya district is located in the Arequipa Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on May 7, 1952. It has an area of ​​398 km². The 2017 census counted 931 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1329, in 2007 it was 1445. The district administration is located in the village of Polobaya Grande, 3091  m high, with 123 inhabitants (as of 2017). Polobaya Grande is located 25 km southeast of the provincial and regional capital Arequipa . In the southeast of the district there is a Marian pilgrimage site with the church of Virgen de la Candelaria de Chapi.

Geographical location

The Polobaya district is located in the extreme southeast of the Arequipa province. In the northeast, the district extends to the mountain range of the Picchu Picchu volcano . The south of the district consists of desert landscape.

The Polobaya district is bordered to the west by the district Yarabamba , in the extreme northwest of the district Quequeña , on the north by the district Pocsi , on the east by the district Puquina ( province General Sánchez Cerro ), on the south by the district La Capilla (also in the General Sánchez Cerro Province) and in the extreme southwest of the Cocachacra District ( Islay Province ).
