The Islay Province is one of eight provinces in the Arequipa region on the Pacific coast in southern Peru . The province has an area of 3886.49 km². At the 2017 census, 52,034 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 50,039, in 2007 it was 52,264. The provincial administration is located in the city of Mollendo .
Geographical location
The province of Islay is located about 880 km south-southeast of the state capital Lima . It extends over an approximately 80 km long stretch of coast in the WNW-OSE direction. The province extends up to almost 60 km inland. The area has very little rainfall and has a desert landscape. The Río Tambo crosses the province in a predominantly southwestern direction and flows into the sea at La Curva.
The province of Islay borders on the province of Camaná in the west, on the province of Arequipa in the north and on the region of Moquegua in the east .
Administrative division
The province of Islay is divided into six districts (distritos) . The Mollendo district is the seat of the provincial administration.
