The Mejía district is located in the Islay province in the Arequipa region in southwest Peru . The district has an area of 100.78 km². The 2017 census counted 1,172 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1,248, in 2007 1,132. The district administration is based in the coastal town of Mejía with 835 inhabitants (as of 2017).
The district of Mejía is centrally located in the province of Islay. It extends along an approximately 9 km long section of the Pacific coast and extends almost 16 km inland. The district is only populated along the coast. Irrigated agriculture also takes place there. The hinterland is desert. The district of Mejía borders in the northwest on the district Mollendo , in the northeast on the district Cocachacra and in the southeast on the district Deán Valdivia . National Road 15 runs along the coast through the district.
