The Punta de Bombón district is located in the Islay province in the Arequipa region in southwest Peru . The district has an area of 769.76 km². The 2017 census counted 6,456 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 6,450, in 2007 6,621. The district administration is based in the small town of Punta de Bombón, east of the mouth of the Río Tambo , with 5,813 inhabitants (as of 2017).
The district of Punta de Bombón is located in the southeast of the province of Islay. It stretches along a 40 km stretch of the Pacific coast east of the mouth of the Río Tambo. It extends about 30 km inland. The district is bordered to the northwest on the district Deán Valdivia , on the north by the district Cocachacra and on the southeast by the provinces of Mariscal Nieto and Ilo (both in the region Moquegua ). Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the river valley of the Río Tambo, otherwise the district consists of desert. The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) runs through the hinterland of the district.
