Districts of Islay Province

The Mollendo district is located in the Islay province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​960.83 km². The 2017 census counted 24,073 residents. In 1993 the population was 25,434, in 2007 24,028. The district administration is based in the coastal provincial capital Mollendo with 23,886 inhabitants (as of 2017).

The Mollendo district is located in the west of the Islay province. Only the Islay district is further to the west. The Mollendo district stretches along a nearly 12 km long section of the Pacific coast . In the west it borders on the district of Islay with the city of Islay and the port of Matarani , in the southeast on the district of Mejía with the coastal town of the same name. The Mollendo district extends up to almost 50 km inland. Apart from the coastline, the district is largely desert and unpopulated. The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) from La Joya to Moquegua crosses the hinterland of the district. In the north the district borders on the La Joya district ( Arequipa province ), in the northeast on the Cocachacra district .
