Districts of Islay Province

The Islay District is located in the Islay Province in the Arequipa administrative region in southwest Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​975.85 km² (according to other sources: 364 km²). In 2017 the population was 5132. In 1993 the population was 2100, in 2007 4823. The administrative seat of the district is the city of Islay . The city of Islay, located in the extreme southeast of the district, is congruent with the district and also includes the port of Matarani .

Geographical location

The district of Islay extends over an approximately 40 km long stretch of coast on the Pacific Ocean in the west of the province of Islay. It extends about 23 km inland and consists mainly of desert-like arid uninhabited landscape. Only in the extreme southeast of the district is an urban area with Islay and Matarani. This borders the provincial capital Mollendo in the east . The district borders in the east on the district Mollendo , in the northeast on the district La Joya of the province of Arequipa and in the northwest on the district of Quilca of the province Camaná .
