The Quilca district is located in the Camaná province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. The Quilca district has an area of 897 km². The 2017 census counted 943 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1087, in 2007 806. The district administration is located in the 82 m high town of Quilca with 168 inhabitants (as of 2017). Quilca is located on the west bank of the Río Quilca immediately above its confluence with the Pacific Ocean . Quilca is 32 km east-southeast of the provincial capital Camaná . The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) runs along the sea coast.
Geographical location
The Quilca district is located in the east of the Camaná province. The district has around 58 km of coastline and extends up to 36 km inland. The Río Quilca and its right tributary Río Siguas cross the district. The area consists mainly of desert. Irrigated agriculture is only practiced along the course of the Río Quilca.
The Quilca district is bordered by the Samuel Pastor district to the west, the Majes district ( Caylloma province ) to the north, the San Juan de Siguas , Santa Rita de Siguas and Vítor districts to the northeast (all three in Arequipa province ) and the southeast to the Islay District ( Islay Province ).
