The José María Quimper district is located in the Camaná province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on November 3, 1944. The district was named after José María Quimper, a local politician from the 19th century.

The José María Quimper district has an area of ​​16 km². The 2017 census counted 4641 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3296, in 2007 it was 3916. The district administration is located in the 22  m high village of El Cardo with 666 inhabitants (as of 2017). El Cardo is 2.5 km northwest of the provincial capital Camaná . The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) crosses the district.

Geographical location

The José María Quimper district lies on both sides of the Río Camaná in the central part of the Camaná province. The district stretches up to 2.6 km to the Pacific coast . The district extends over the western part of the river valley of the Río Camaná, where irrigated agriculture is practiced, and extends in the west to the adjacent hills, which reach heights of 600  m .

The José María Quimper district is bordered to the south and the west by the district Mariscal Cáceres , on the north by the district Nicolás de Piérola , on the east by the District Pastor Samuel and the southeast by the district Camaná .

In addition to the main town El Cardo, there are the following villages in the district:

  • Puente Fierro (1434 inhabitants)
